5 Key Questions To Ask During Your Job Interview

In my previous blog post, I shared 10 tips aimed at helping you know what you should be doing before, during and after a job interview. Today, I’m excited to take a deeper dive into tip #8, the one that’s all about putting you in the driver’s seat – asking questions during your interview.

In the world of job hunting, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that interviews are all about impressing the company that’s looking to hire. But here’s the thing: it’s not a one-way street. Having spent over seven years in the recruitment industry, I can tell you that you should be just as focused on evaluating the company as they are on assessing you.

The interview is your chance to ensure that the organization aligns with your values and is a comfortable cultural fit for you. After all, a job is not just about the tasks you’ll perform; it’s about the environment you’ll immerse yourself in day in and day out.

By asking the right questions, you can uncover valuable information about the company and make an informed decision about your potential future there. In this blog post, I want to share five key questions that you should consider asking during your interview to help you make an informed decision about your potential employer.

Question #1: What’s the reason behind this job opening?

Understanding the reason behind the vacancy of the position you’re applying for is crucial. It provides valuable insights into the company’s current situation. Is this vacancy a result of the company’s growth or expansion? Perhaps it’s due to an employee’s departure, voluntary or involuntary. Does the role have a history of high turnover? Or is it an entirely new position, suggesting potential experimentation? Obtaining clarity on the root cause behind the vacancy can provide you with a deeper understanding of the role’s stability and what you can expect if you were to join the organization.

Question #2: What is your decision timeline?

Some organizations aim for a quick hiring process, while others prefer a more deliberate, drawn out approach – interviewing multiple candidates over an extended period. Knowing when they plan to make a decision allows you to manage your expectations and make informed decisions about your job search.

Question #3: What are the next steps in the selection process?

Will there be another round of interviews? Are there additional evaluation steps that you should prepare for? Will you be required to undergo a drug test or a background check? Knowing what lies ahead allows you to organize your time, gather any necessary documentation, and adequately prepare for each stage of the selection process.

Question #4: Can you provide insights into the training process?

Understanding the training process is critical when considering a new job opportunity. It can significantly impact your onboarding and adaptation to the role. Key aspects to consider when asking this question include the duration of the training, potential changes in compensation during this period, the structure of the training schedule, and whether there is even a formal training period in place. Some companies might expect you to dive right into the role.

Question #5: What aspects of the job or the company do you find most enjoyable?

As a recruiter myself, I appreciate this question. I’m fortunate to love my job and the company I represent, making it easy for me to highlight the aspects I truly enjoy. Asking this question allows you to gauge the interviewer’s enthusiasm for the company. If the interviewer readily shares what they find most enjoyable, it’s usually a good sign of a positive work environment. However, if they struggle to answer, it could be an indicator of potential dissatisfaction within the organization.
